FILM DIRECTOR

Stephen Soucy directs and writes film projects under his independent production entity, Modernist Film. His feature documentary, Merchant Ivory, will be distributed worldwide by Cohen Media Group in 2024. Other completed projects include the short animated film, Rich Atmosphere: The Music of Merchant Ivory Films, the documentary short film, Art and Provincetown, and the narrative short films: Slant and Tightwire. Next productions include the short films, Reggie Rose (adapted from a short story by David Ebershoff), Scanner Days, Starry Nights (adapted from a story by Martin Rose); and the features: Orientation (original), After the Blue Hour (adapted from John Rechy’s novel), and The Coming Storm (adapted from Paul Russell’s novel).


MERCHANT IVORY

Merchant Ivory (2023) is the first definitive feature documentary to lend new and compelling perspectives on the partnership, both professional and personal, of director James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant and their primary associates, writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and composer Richard Robbins. Footage from more than fifty interviews, clips, and archival material gives voice to the family of actors and technicians who helped define Merchant Ivory’s Academy Award-winning work of consummate quality and intelligence. With six Oscar winners among the notable artists participating, these close and often long-term collaborators intimately detail the transformational cinematic creativity and personal and professional drama of the wandering company that left an indelible impact on film culture.

RICH ATMOSPHERE: THE MUSIC OF MERCHANT IVORY FILMS

James Ivory, Academy Award-winner (Call Me By Your Name) narrates this animated film, a tribute to his long-time composer, Richard "Dick" Robbins. Rich Atmosphere: The Music of Merchant Ivory Films features animation direction by Jack Cunningham and had its world premiere at OUTFEST 2020 in Los Angeles.

SLANT

Set in Palm Springs and structured by an Emily Dickinson poem. Slant tells the story of a college professor in his early 50s looking for connection long after the loss of his partner to AIDS.

TIGHTWIRE

Tightwire is a short film based on the short story, Edward at the Edge, by Edgar® Award-winning author John Morgan Wilson: On their way to pulling off the perfect murder, a scheming couple are undone by their target, who proves to be a most gifted amateur.

ART AND PROVINCETOWN

Art and Provincetown is a documentary short featuring the Provincetown-based painter, Adam Peck. Adam reveals his motivations to create art, and as a long-term resident of Provincetown on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, he shares his perspective on that which makes P-Town unique and a draw to artists from around the world.
